From the Editor-in-Chief: Preparing for the Robotic Era in Spinal Treatment and Surgery

In the future, mankind will live a longer, healthier, and happier life, and conquering degenerative diseases, especially degenerative spinal diseases, will be a very important part of achieving this. Ultimately, conquering degenerative spinal diseases will be maximized through robotic surgery and treatment based on endoscopic spinal surgery, and it will play a very important role in maintaining human health and happiness. However, robotic surgery in the field of spine has been developed with a surgeon-centered approach rather than a patient-centered approach to date, and it is expected that it will take a long time for robotic surgery to ultimately solve spinal diseases centered on patients. Fortunately, endoscopic spinal surgery is considered a fundamental technology that can support the development of patient-centered robotic spinal surgery, and has advanced the technology through many developments so far.

It is true that endoscopic spinal surgery has developed competitively as various types of endoscopic spinal surgery have been introduced, and for this reason, it is time to comprehensively observe the nomenclature of various types of endoscopic spinal surgery. The official nomenclature of endoscopic spine surgery is thought to be vertebroscope or spinoscoe, but Wang et al. [1] stated that it would be better to use spinoscope, which is more familiar to us. The advancement of endoscopic spinal surgery through the use of an integrated nomenclature for endoscopic spine surgery will be a new turning point for the upcoming era of robotic spine treatment based on endoscopic spine surgery.
